Recently, the WSJ reported that the U.S. Labor Secretary, Martin Walsh, is emphasizing the importance of immigration to America’s economic strength.
"America has always been a country that has depended on immigration," said Walsh. It’s certainly true that there are far more vacant jobs than there are qualified workers. However, the current U.S. immigration policy isn’t tailored to address this.
Mr. Walsh noted that students from all over the world come to the U.S. to attend schools and universities, but risk being sent back home if they fail to secure a work visa. This creates a paradigm in which the U.S. attracts top-level talent, but may fail to retain it because of inefficient immigration policies.
Mr. Walsh also said, "[t]he threat to the American economy long-term is not inflation, it's [about] immigration.” Considering the dire strain that skyrocketing inflation has put on families and businesses in the U.S., this statement surely puts the state of American immigration policy into perspective.
What we take away from the WSJ article is that America’s labor shortage is a serious detriment to the national economy, and immigrants may be able to solve this problem, propelling the U.S. into a new era of prosperity.
